How do I find privately owned rental apartments in Pittsburgh, PA?

I'll be moving to Pittsburgh PA in June from Denver, CO with my significant other and dog. We are in our mid 20's and are interested in neighborhoods in the areas near Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Friendship, etc. I am not able to travel to Pittsburgh to find an apartment and am relying solely on the internet. The problem I frequently run into on apartment search websites is that the listings mainly consist of company owned complex style apartments. I find it difficult to locate any privately/family owned apartments listed for rent online. I am open to small apartment buildings or homes converted into multiple apartment units. Does anyone in the Pittsburgh area know of any specific apartments or names of rental companies that fit this description?
