Why are so many Americans apathetic about their rights?

It seems we've grown into the type of people that like to law down and take it. Across all ages and party affiliations I've noticed that alot of people really don't care about how much the government lies to them. And I'm not talking about conspiracy theories here, I'm talking about blatant lies and cover-ups. The FDA puts cancerous hormones in our Milk and we somehow still believe Milk is good for us? I mean, that's just scary. How does this happen? When did we lose our will to stand up and be heard?
