I have two friends who want me to photograph their babies,?

I only have an SLR, not digital so I need some quick advice and tips. I want the pictures to come out good, and I would like to get some of those shots in black and white with a black background and all you see is the baby and hands. But I want the black o come out fully black - is fleece fabric the best for this? Thanks for any advice!
