Why did none of the pilots or aircrew on the 9/11 hijacked planes manage to send the 4 digit hijack code?

Well, I know when the rest of my crew is getting their throat cut by the religion of peace and my life is about to end, the first thing that will be foremost in my mind is setting the correct code in the transponder.
